For those of you that have done this before you'll know what it's all
about. For those who feel like having a go for the first time, it is a
great way to meet some of the club members you haven't bumped into
before, and you'll find it benefits your road running hugely as you
develop muscle strength for the forthcoming spring races on the road.
Chiltern Cross Country League website
For those of you that haven't done a X-Country before or recently, don't panic, Captain Mannering's FAQs will encourage you. For those hardened veterans - see you at the next race:
What is
the Chiltern League X-Country?
A 5 race series
where we compete against 18 other clubs in the region. Held on a
Saturday, the juniors' races usually start at 12.30pm, the ladies at
2:30 and the men's at 3.00. Juniors race between 2k & 5k depending on
age, ladies race up to 6k and the men up to 10k. Despite its reputation
the terrain/environment really isn't as bad as all that (nothing like
those notorious races such as 'The Grim' and 'The Hellrunner', which
appeal only to the self confessed 'nutters' in the club!). In reality
it's more of a run in the countryside.
How
does the scoring work?
It's a reverse
scoring system. If 75 people compete, the winner gets 75 points, the
second place runner 74 and so on. Not all runners will score, but the
larger the Maidenhead contingent, the further down the list others teams
scoring members will finish. SO EVERYONE'S PARTICIPATION IS IMPORTANT.
What
are the benefits of running XC?
It will
undoubtedly strengthen your leg and core muscles for the spring road
racing season ahead, and as it is off-road, there is less impact on the
joints.
1. It truly is a team event, and a great opportunity to get to know other members of the club that you probably never have opportunity to spark up a conversation with.
2. It'll make you feel much better about the excesses of the
Friday night.
3. You don't even have to pay to enter!!! (in my opinion great
with all the £20 plus road race entry fees these days)
4. There's a chance that I might buy you a beer (sorry juniors
- that's a non-alcoholic equivalent for you!) at an end of season
drink-up (yup, it appears I'm resorting to bribery).
What do I need to participate?
1. Transport to the venue (or be at
the clubhouse for 12.00 to share a lift).
2. A Maidenhead vest
3. Some off-road shoes (you can try without, but it'll be
rather like ice-skating - Sweatshop and Apex both have a wide range).
